Seventeenth Century Map of Italy

This beautifully detailed geographical map of Italy was printed in 1640. It was made by the expert Swiss engraver Matthaus Merian the Elder (1593-1650). Its high quality uniform inking is set on hand-made paper also made in the early 17th century which is still well preserved today. The map is titled, "Nova Italiæ delineatio" (literally translated as New Italy Outlined) and is adorned with decorative elements in particular extremely detailed ships and calligraphy.
The mountain ranges are signified with irregular engravings of small hills; cities are identified with a circle or a small castle according to their importance and tiny crosses to indicate their religious significance. A light border indicates the different states of Italy as Italy was not one country at the time. One can clearly see the Duchy of Tuscany, The kingdom of Naples and the Papal States.
